What Is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transition phase before menopause, when your hormones begin to shift away from a reproductive focus. It often starts in your 40s and can last several years. Common symptoms include mood swings, fatigue, brain fog, irregular periods, sleep disturbances, heart palpitations, urinary/vaginal symptoms, and low libido. There are many less common symptoms that either get overlooked or are not appropriately attributed to hormonal shifts. These symptoms are real AND they are treatable, especially when you partner with a physician that has advanced hormone training that specifically targets this time period.

This phase also brings with it clinically significant health risks. Research shows that perimenopause is associated with increased visceral (abdominal) fat accumulation, changes in insulin sensitivity, and a higher risk for dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease. Hormonal changes also contribute to declining bone density, particularly when estrogen levels begin to drop more consistently. Cognitive shifts, including memory concerns and decreased mental clarity, are increasingly recognized as part of the neuroendocrine transition. Additionally, sleep disturbances related to fluctuating estrogen and progesterone can further compound fatigue, weight changes, and mood disruption.

Understanding these risks allows for earlier, targeted intervention. With evidence-based, individualized care, many of these symptoms and risk factors can be managed effectively to support long-term health and quality of life.

Our Core Services

  • Root-Cause Health Evaluation: Gut health, fatigue, brain fog, stress, inflammation, and more. Chronic stress affects so many aspects of our lives and health. When cortisol is high over the long term, there are downstream effects that can lead to significant fatigue or loss of energy, sleep issues, gut issues, immune system and nervous system dysregulation. Conventional medicine tends to put a bandaid approach on treatment of symptoms with just pharmaceuticals, but true healing often requires getting to the root cause, removing the barriers to healing, and allowing the body to perform its natural healing processes. Dr. Huntington uses a unique approach to target nutritional deficiencies, inflammation, hormone imbalances, and gut health, through specific root cause testing, diet and lifestyle adjustments, supplementation, and if needed, medications.

  • Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (BHRT): Optimizing thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, etc. There is a big difference between giving hormones to get rid of hot flashes versus optimizing hormones to try to protect the brain, bones, heart, etc. Hormones influence everything from sleep and mood to metabolism, cognitive clarity, and cardiovascular protection. When prescribed and monitored properly, bioidentical hormones can help restore balance, prevent age-related decline, and support graceful, empowered aging. With personalized dosing, advanced lab monitoring, and a focus on safety, we aim to help you feel like yourself again, while also protecting the systems that matter most for your future health.

  • Metabolic & Weight Health: When going through menopause, it is very common to have an increase in visceral fat, or abdominal fat, which leads to insulin resistance. This can be a very frustrating change in body composition, weight, and wellness, leading potentially to pre- diabetes, abnormal inflammatory response, increase in lipid or cholesterol levels, etc. We support our patients to achieve optimal metabolic health through targeted dietary focus, supplementation of key nutrients, strength training and regular activity, and weight loss including GLP-1 medications.

  • Longevity & Aging Support: Women tend to live longer than men, but we spend more of our lives with poorer health than men. Many of the longevity programs are tailored towards men, so our unique program meets women where they are at, and strives to set you up for success for long term optimal health. Our options include wearable integration, body composition analysis, and biological age testing, including your rate of aging, how old your body is at the cellular level, and how fast your organ systems are aging.

You Deserve to Feel Like Yourself Again!

Far too often, women are told that their symptoms are “just part of aging” or something they simply have to endure. Many are dismissed, reassured that “nothing is wrong,” or warned (often without appropriate context) that hormone therapy is dangerous. Messages like these leave women feeling unheard, unsupported, and misinformed.

At Digna Whole Health, we believe you deserve better. You deserve to be taken seriously, to have your symptoms explored, and to receive care that is both respectful and backed by evidence.

Contrary to outdated beliefs, hormone therapy, when appropriately prescribed, can be a safe and effective way to manage symptoms and protect long term health. Research supports its role in reducing the risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline when used during the menopausal transition.
